Retailers in the Buchanan County town of Independence have agreed to try and help cut the production of methamphetamine by tracking the sale of starter fluid for cars. Independence Police Chief Mike McConnell says the fluid contains ether, which is used in making meth. Retailers say they sometimes see customers buying several cans of the starter fluid at a time, which raises suspicion. McConnell says the businesses have voluntarily agreed to track the sale of the starter fluid. He says anyone who wants to buy more than one can of fluid will be asked to sign their name, address and why they’re buying the stuff. The chief believes tracking sales may keep meth makers away. McConnell says eight stores have agreed to participate in the program.
