Two more caught in border tax scam

Two more western Iowans recently pleaded guilty to trying to claim South Dakota residency to avoid paying taxes in Iowa. Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance investigator Randy Lane says they’ve concentrated on finding the tax cheats the last six years. Lane says they have a variety of ways of identifying people who’re trying to dodge their taxes. He says many of them have post office boxes in South Dakota that tip off authorities. He says they also get calls from informants.Lane says the latest cases puts them over one dozen people caught.He says getting caught trying to avoid paying the taxes ends up being expensive.Lane says it’s a felony charge that could net five years in jail and up to 75-hundred dollars in fines. Lane says there is a 75-percet fraud penalty charged to those who’re found guilty of trying to avoid paying Iowa taxes. The latest people to plead guilty to the charges were from Sioux City.
