Farmers might be able to make a little money and help the environment at the same time under a plan being considered in a U-S Senate panel today. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says the Ag Committee is weighing ways farmers could help cut down on global warming.Harkin says farmers might be paid for setting up carbon sinks or for taking land out of farm production to grow trees. Harkin says they need to find a way to increase farmers income.Harkin, a democrat, says such “green” farming practices could bring federal rewards for farmers within a year or two.Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says he -may- have an announcement later today on what he calls a breakthrough in ending child labor overseas. He says there may be agreement on adopting his amendment on an Africa trade bill. He says it would be “an historic step in ending abusive and explotive child labor.”Harkin’s measure would hinge U-S trade benefits on our trading partners enacting and effectively enforcing anti-child labor laws.
