When it comes to hitting the highway, Iowans still think bigger’s better. The latest state statistics on vehicle registrations show the number of S-U-V’s and large cars increased from 1998 to 1999. Jody Johnson of the Iowa Department of Transportation says big trucks are also popular, increasing by a little over one percent.She says compact cars lost ground by six percent. The number of mopeds dropped nine percent.The registration numbers show large cars as the most popular driving choice. They make up over 33-percent of the registered vehicles in Iowa. There are just over three million cars in the state, a less than one percent increase.
