Nearly 100 vintage cars are in the midst of a trans-continental rally-race which will roar into Iowa today. The Great Road Race features pre-1960 vehicles with a combined value exceeding three-million dollars. Exact routes through Iowa are still unclear because of the nature of the rally-race, which does NOT run on major roads. Race spokesman Mike Ewing says the object is not to finish each day’s journey first, but to finish at a specific time. During the trek, the cars will be traveling four thousand miles, visiting 40 cities in 14 days. Ewing says the rare and wonderfully-restored cars are drawing large crowds wherever they go. The race is expected to stop in the Quad Cities and Iowa City this afternoon, with an overnight stop in Des Moines. The rally leaves Sunday morning, headed for Lincoln, Nebraska.
