Senator Tom Harkin is questioning a recent University of Iowa study which debunks the existence of Gulf War Syndrome. Harkin says initial studies of Vietnam vets showed no problems with Agent Orange, but continued digging finally showed the serious health problems Agent Orange caused. University of Iowa researchers compared the problems of 19-hundred Iowa Gulf War veterans and 18-hundred Iowa soldiers who weren’t deployed. Those who went overseas were 90-percent more likely to report problems, but their aches and pains weren’t much different from the other troops’ troubles. Harkin isn’t sure the U-of-I research took everything into account. For example, Harkin says some U-S soldiers were reportedly given up to 20 vaccinations in one day. Harkin says “no one really knows how these drugs all interacted when they’re given to one person in a short period of time.”
