We’re right in the middle of the deadliest two-month period to be on Iowa’s roads. Traffic is the heaviest during June and July and those are also the busiest months for roadwork zones. Jerry Dickenson is spokesman for the Iowa Department of Transportation says in addition to the 500 D-O-T road construction projects during the summer, there are 120 department garages statewide that will set up as many as four short-term work zones for repairs every day. Dickinson says Iowans are warned to take it easy when they’re behind the wheel.Motorists can check the status of road work statewide by logging on to the work zone website at: “www.dot.state.ia.us/roadcons.htm”. Since 1992, there have been 67 work zone fatalities in Iowa. That death toll is a number Dickinson says motorists should pay close attention to.as up to 90-percent of the people killed in Iowa work zones are motorists and their passengers. More than 37-million people are expected to be on the road this holiday weekend, according to Triple-A.
