Despite recent rains, many Iowans are still concerned about a looming drought. An agricultural engineer suggests Iowa homeowners and farmers take a few precautions to conserve water. Tom Glanville, at the Iowa State University Extension Department, says little leaks can equate to big losses.A leaking water faucet can waste 250 gallons a month. Glanville says farmers with livestock and poultry should do a little preventive maintenance to fix for leaks.Glanville says homeowners should check each of their toilets to see if there’s a leak, since just a trickle could mean one-hundred gallons of water wasted every day.Another way to check for leaks is to shut off all taps and water-using devices and note the number on the water meter, then check the meter again after a few hours.
