It’s the first full workday for use of the new 6-4-1 area code for callers in the center of the state. Rob Hillesland of the Iowa Utilities Board says things appear to be going smoothly. The Board set up a five-month transition period in which you can dial the new 6-4-1 area code, or the old 5-1-5 code and still get through. Hillesland says they want everyone to start using the 6-4-1 code now to help turn up any problems. If you do have trouble getting through using 6-4-1, he suggests you first test your equipment. If that doesn’t work, he says you should call your service provider.Hillesland says a problem reported with 9-1-1 service in northeast Iowa was not related to the new area code. Hillesland says the problem in Franklin County was apparently due to a local switch, not the 6-4-1 area code. The new 6-4-1 area code will become mandatory on December 3rd.
