The two top teams remained the same in the final regular season 4A-3A Radio Iowa/Coaches Assocation baseball polls. West Des Moines Valley will head into tournament play ranked number one in Class 4-A despite two losses in the final week to ninth ranked Urbandale. Cedar Rapids Washington moved up from fourth to second and is followed by West Des Moines Dowling, Iowa City High and Sioux City East in the top five. The Oelwein Huskies suffered a loss in the final week of the season. It was the only blemish on their record and they hold onto the top spot in Class 3-A going into tourney play. West Delaware remained number two, while Mount Pleasant and Denison-Schleswig flip-flopped from the last poll to finish third and fourth respectively. Vinton-Shellsburg rounds out the top five.It’s number-three versus number-four in Class 1A District semifinal baseball tonight in Sheffield when Mason City Newman plays SCMT-Sheffield. Number-three Mason City Newman is coming off of wins of 16-6 over Rockwell- Swaledale and 14-0 over Ventura in their first two district games. Knights coach Tony Adams says his club is ready to step their game up to the next level against SCMT.Number-four SCMT opened district play Wednesday with a 13-8 win over Nora Springs-Rock Falls. Spartans coach Chad Slagle says tonight’s game with Newman could be a slugfest.Newman comes in with a record of 30-7. SCMT is 25-2.
