Over six-hundred Korean War Veterans attended a ceremony today in Sioux City commemorating the 50th anniversary of the War. Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole, a veteran of World War Two, was the keynote speaker. Dole says the veterans “made America what it is today.”Iowa Congressman Tom Latham organized the event to present veterans with commemorative medals from the government honoring their service. He says the reason he organized the ceremony was to make people aware of the veteran’s contribution.Dole says this was the first large-scale event of its kind in the country, and he hopes there will be others.The Korean War began in June of 1950 and over 85-thousand Iowans served. Veterans officials say 532 Iowans were killed in the war.
