Farm interests took center stage at the Republican National Convention yesterday with the traditional “Farm Breakfast” financed by agri-businesses. The republican party’s nominee usually attends, but George W. Bush hadn’t arrived in Philly yet, so his dad stood in. Tom Dorr of Marcus, Iowa, is a member of National Farmers and Ranchers for Bush. Dorr says Bush has given his support for ethanol and the “Freedom to Farm” act.Dorr says he’s thought about retired military leader Colin Powell’s statements about lingering racism in the country. Dorr says he may get in trouble for saying it, but Dorr detects a level of racism in the opposition to a new beef packing plant in Iowa. Dorr is an alternate delegate to the convention, which is his first.
