Three of Iowa’s four Republican congressmen chose not to stay with the Iowa delegation at this past week’s Republican National Convention. Congressman Jim Leach of Davenport was, however, a guest at the Hampton Inn in New Jersey where rank-and-file Iowans stayed.Senator Charles Grassley chose to stay with the Iowans rather than take the luxury route. He says he would rather spend more time with the delegates who he says are important to the Republican Party.Congressman Greg Ganske stayed in some sort of converted barracks with a host of other Congressman. Leach turned down a limo ride paid for by a one of the members of the republican leadership.Congressman Tom Latham stopped by the Iowa delegation hotel once to pick up his credentials. Congressman Jim Nussle never visited the hotel, but did interact with Iowans during convention sessions. Iowa’s top three democrats — Governor Vilsack, Senator Harkin and Congressman Boswell — are all registered to stay in the same hotel as Iowa democrats attending the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
