A republican legislator who pushed for the just-concluded “Tax Freedom Weekend” has another idea. Representative James Van Fossen, a republican from Davenport, is considering the temporary suspension of sales taxes on computer purchases. This past Friday and Saturday, the state sales tax was not charged on clothing and shoes worth less than a hundred dollars. Next week, the state of Pennsylvania is not charging Pennsylvania sales taxes on computers. Van Fossen says making a computer purchase without paying sales taxes would save consumers a lot of money, since they cost more than clothing.State officials say they won’t know how Iowa retailers fared during “Tax Freedom Weekend” for several weeks.
