Fire struck several businesses and apartments in downtown Guthrie Centerlast night in west central Iowa. Damage is still being assessed. No injuries are reported. Guthrie Center Fire Chief Randy Sheeder saysthe fire was first reported before 8 o-clock last night and crews were on the scene about 12 hours. They were called back out this morning to knock out a flare-up of flames. Chief Sheeder says the fire grew too big, too quickly, last night for his department to handle it alone.Fire crews had to tap into a local swimming pool to fight the flames. The fire is believed to have started in a plumbing supply and fixtures store, Helen’s Enterprise. The flames were limited to that building, which was gutted. Sheeder says several adjoining downtown businesses were damaged by smoke and water, but not by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office. Fire departments responded from all around Guthrie Center, including West Des Moines, Perry, Yale, Bagley, and Adair.
