Senator Charles Grassley says he is not surprised by Attorney General Janet Reno’s decision not to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Al Gore’s fundraising activities in 1996. Reno says she does not believe any further investigation would lead to evidence that would result in charges. Grassley says this is the third time Reno rejected a recommendation to investigate Gore.Grassley says by appointing a special prosecutor, Reno would have hurt Gore’s election chances.Grassley does not believe there will be a push to investigate Gore after the election. A statement from Gore’s republican rival, George Bush, says the American people are sick of investigations and scandals. Bush suggests the best way to put the fundraising scandal to rest is to elect someone new.
