The Mason City school system is installing a portable defibrillator at the high school. The device can deliver an electric shock to restart the heart of someone in cardiac arrest. Superintendent Keith Sersland says it’s an important addition to the school. The defibrillator will stay in the nurse’s office during the day, and will be taken to the stadium during athletic events.Sersland says the device can help save lives,as statistics have shown quick action with the defibrillator helps victims of cardiac arrest recover. Sersland believes Mason City is one of the first high schools to purchase a defibrillator. The Cerro Gordo County Medical Society is paying two-thirds of the cost of the four thousand dollar unit. The school district is paying the rest.
