A Knoxville man caught the big one. Ralph Mayer caught a state record fish on July 29th. Meyer caught a two-pound-one-ounce green sunfish, a fish that’s smaller than the blue gill and preyed upon by bass.Mayer, who’s been fishing since he was a kid, caught his state-record sunfish at about 8:45 at night.Mayer wasn’t sure what kind of a fish it was, since it was bigger than any sunfish he’d seen. A state fisheries biologist has told him it’s the biggest green sunfish ever caught in the state. The fish came within an ounce of being the biggest green sunfish caught in the country. Back in 1971, a two-pound-TWO-ounce sunfish was caught in Missouri.
