The Iowa State Patrol is adding extra officers to the highways in a special safety effort this Labor Day weekend. The Chief of the State Patrol says the effort is called “Operation CARE” or Combined Accident Reduction Effort.Colonel Robert Garrison says they want to cut traffic deaths by getting people to slow down and drive responsibly.There were three traffic deaths in Iowa during Labor Day last year. Garrison says they’ll have an extra 96 troopers on the roads.Garrison says you can keep law officers safe by giving them room to work when you approach a squad car that’s stopped someone.Garrison says the Patrol is working with other law enforcement agencies in this weekend’s effort.
