Students at Iowa’s three public universities can expect higher tuition and fees next year — but student leaders are asking just how much of a hike is really needed. The increases average about 300-dollars more a year for in-state students and between 600 and a-thousand dollars more for out-of-staters. University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman says the U-of-I plans to do more to assure students the money is being well spent.Andy Tofilon, a member of the Iowa State University Student Body Government, asked regents yesterday to reconsider the increase so it wouldn’t be such a burden on students. The Regents continue meeting today in Iowa City. They’ll take a final vote on tuition at the October meeting in Ames. Even with the proposed tuition increase, the U-of-I’s tuition is one of the lowest in the Big Ten conference.
