A former Iowa man today pled guilty to criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the crash that killed Minnesota Timberwolves guard Malik Sealy. Former Des Moines resident Souksangouane Phengsene (SOUK’-san-gwan feng-SENG’) was to go on trial today in Minneapolis. Police say Phengsene was driving on the wrong side of a divided highway when he hit Sealy’s vehicle head-on. Phengsene admitted to drinking alcohol with a friend before the crash. Minnesota sentencing guidelines call for a four-year sentence, but Phengsene’s lawyer will ask to have it reduced. Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobishar will fight a reduction.Sentencing is set for October 18th. Phengsene was arrested and convicted for drunk driving in Des Moines in 1997. The Laos native still has family in Iowa, but now resides in the Twin Cities.
