An Iowa anti-gun group is joining a national effort tonight to fight gun violence. It’s called “First Monday.” Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence president, John Johnson, says the first Monday in October is the day the nation focuses on justice as the Supreme Court’s term begins. Johnson’s group is holding events in Des Moines and Iowa City.He says the goal is to mobilize people to become more active against gun violence. Johnson says they want those who oppose gun violence to become more vocal.Johnson says the ultimate goal is to cut the number of gun deaths.He says the effort is focusing on handguns as the studies show the vast majority of deaths are caused by handguns. He says they are encouraging people to remove the handguns from their homes. Johnson says groups across the country are holding events to highlight the problem of gun violence.
