A panel of medical experts is recommending widespread use of automated external defibrillators. The device delivers a shock to someone in cardiac arrest to get his or her heart started again. The state’s Council of Scientific Health Advisors released its recommendation Monday to Department of Public Health director Dr. Stephen Gleason.One of the automated defibrillators was used last spring at the State Capitol to save the life of Iowa Republican Party Chairman Kayne Robinson.Gleason says the council recommends only people with proper training use the devices. He says that could change as questions are answered about how the machine is used.Dr. Gleason believes the machines will someday be as common as fire extinguishers in public areas and private homes.Gleason says the only thing holding back the machines is a lack of long-term information on their use.There are currently 59 automatic defibrillators used by businesses, schools and public safety agencies throughout the state.
