A Sioux City man testifed before a Senate committee in Washington D.C. Thursday on older American workers. 72-year-old Jim Gittins made the trip after being named an outstanding older worker. Gittins is the program coordinator at the Three Rivers Independent Living Center. He helps people with disabilities stay in their own home — which sometimes involves an assistant to help the person.Gittins says it’s important to help older Americans be productive, otherwise their talents are going to waste. He says working gives the elderly a feeling of self-confidence and allows them to become a well-rounded and happier person.Gittins has overcome polio, heart attacks and a stroke to continue working.
