Republican and democrat legislators are quibbling over how much money to spend next year raising teacher salaries. House Democrat Leader Dave Schrader of Monroe says democrats believe 60-million dollars should be spent next year to raise teacher salaries and tie those pay hikes to job performance. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says the G-O-P wants to spread the pay gains over a few years. He says you can’t “solve the problem by throwing money at it.”Senate Democrat Leader Mike Gronstal of Council Bluffs says Republican legislators have a history of rejecting teacher pay increases. House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs says Gronstal’s argument is “ludicrous.” He says Republicans put more money into education programs in other areas in and effort to move the state forward.Governor Vilsack’s office is on the second floor of the statehouse, and the legislature’s located on the third floor. The legislators made their comments on the Iowa Public Television program, “Iowa Press.”
