Iowa’s energy suppliers met with state regulators yesterday, and discussed plans to reserve fuel if the supply dips too low. David Downing of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says if this is a frigid winter, there could be shortages.If there is a shortage, Downing says the Governor can declare an “energy emergency.” Then, natural gas, electricity and fuel oil must be set-aside for critical customers, like hospitals, schools and nursing homes.None of Iowa’s Governors have ever declared an “energy emergency” and Downing hopes Iowa avoids one this winter.Downing says there are some state regulations, which could be lifted to help energy suppliers meet demand. He says they can institute driver’s waivers, to let propane haulers drive more hours.The Governor’s Energy Task Force met on Thursday to review ways the state can address the current energy crisis and encourage alternative energy development in the future.
