Most Iowans will have to wait ’til December to get flu vaccine. State epidemiologist Dr. Patricia Quinlisk is asking the state’s medical community to reserve the current supply of vaccine for “high risk” patients.The “high risk” category includes the elderly, anyone with a heart or lung condition, children with asthma and pregnant women. It also includes family members of anyone with those conditions, as well as health care workers. Dr. Quinlisk says for the rest of us, there’s really no danger in waiting ’til December to get a flu shot.Flu shots have been delayed this year because of a shortage of vaccine. Influenza or the flu is a respiratory illness caused by a virus. Symptoms include a fever, cough and achy joints.
