Summer’s edging closer, but even with sunny warm days appearing, more people are turning to a “fake bake”. Penny Oliver, manager of Visual Impact in Des Moines, says it’s now the tanning season. She says more people begin preparations for cruises, dances and other events. Oliver says the weather could boost a tanning salon’s business, but she says the real profits have much more to do with convenience. Oliver says it is quicker to use a tanning bed, as opposed to sitting outside in the sun for longer periods of time. Suzanne Walker of the American Cancer Society says “tan fans” have their facts wrong. Walker says people have a misconception about what is healthy skin. She says every time a person tans, they are putting themselves at risk for skin cancer. Walker says people should look at beauty in a different light. Walker says the fairer complexions are the most beautiful because they are the healthiest. Walker says if you decide to get some sun outdoors, you should always wear sun block this summer.
