Stargazing clubs, observatories and planetariums across the state and nation are marking this as Astronomy Day 2001 to show the public how much fun astronomy can be. Christian Anderson, planetarium educator at the Science Center of Iowa, says they have a host of space-related events planned, including a guest lecturer who will speak about life beyond earth. Anderson says the Des Moines-based center is featuring several exhibits and demonstrations on things like the planets, comets, the international space stations, legends about constellations, space laser shows and more. Telescopes will be set up during the day at the Science Center to look at the sun safely. Tonight, if the weather cooperates, the Des Moines Astronomical Society plans to lure sky watchers to an event as well. The subject of “light pollution” will also be discussed at the Science Center in a talk given by a member of the International Dark Sky Association.
