Several record-breaking performances highlighted Friday’s session of the 92nd Drake Relays. Davenport North’s Marques Simmons overcame a slow start to win the boys high school 100-meter dash and equaled his Relays record of 10-point-63 seconds in the process. Simmons became just the second performer to win the 100 three times. The other was legendary Des Moines North runner Clyde Duncan. Lewis Central’s Abby Emsick was a double winner, taking the discus then getting off a late throw to win the shot put. It is her fifth relays title. Pam Orris of Dubuque Senior won the high school girls 100-meter dash after breaking the Relays record in Friday morning’s prelims. Orris says she had a great confidence booster going into the final that helped her win. One of the new events this year is the high school girl’s 400-meter hurdles. It was won by Angie German of West Delaware. After finishing second a year ago Nick Moser of Fort Dodge won the boys’ 400-hurdles. Olympian Suzy Favor-Hamilton may not run today’s special invitational 15 hundred-meter race. Hamilton is coming off an injury suffered last year after the Sydney Games. Hamilton says she if she is feeling great, she’ll run. If not, she will pass up the opportunity.
