Republican legislators are back on the teacher pay bandwagon. Early this year, Republicans promised to provide 40-million dollars to hike teacher pay. Then, a couple of weeks ago, the G-O-P said the state couldn’t afford it. Democrat Governor Tom Vilsack said he’d put his foot down and insist on the 40-million. Now, Republicans say they’ve found the money. Senator Jeff Lamberti, a republican from Ankeny, is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Lamberti says Governors usually get their top priority, and teacher pay is Vilsack’s. Lamberti says there’ll be a complicated maneuver to take some of the money from the check the tobacco companies write the state.Lamberti says the deal will hopefully prevent Vilsack from calling lawmakers back this summer for a special session on the budget.
