We take classes in computing, crafts and cooking — but maybe more people would benefit from a course in love.Psychology Professor Julia Guttman at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant says people can “learn how to love,” to express admiration and encourage a positive bond in others. Guttman and a colleague have established The Family Institute at Iowa Wesleyan and offer courses in how to create strong and lasting love relationships. Dr Julia Guttman is also a family counselor, and sees many cases where some education could help prevent the death of a loving relationship. She says people break up, not because they don’t love but because they don’t know how to nourish a partner or child instead of hurting them. Guttman says we tend to assume there’s nothing we can do to prevent a breakup, or to make our loved ones — feel loved.Say thanks for taking out garbage, listening to me, things I like. And, figure out what you could do that would make the other person feel loved. The Family Institute workshop schedule is available through the college website at iwc.edu
