Environmental activists staged a mid-day news conference to denounce the energy policies President Bush will advance during his visit to Nevada tomorrow. Jane Clark of Clive is the Sierra Club of Iowa’s conservation chair. Clark says Bush should unveil his plan at a “heavily polluting power plant if he wants to represent his plan honestly, rather than holding a photo op.”Clark says the Bush plan calls for building one, old-fashioned power plant each week, for the next 20 years. The environmentalists say it’d be better to focus on “renewable fuels” like wind energy and to raise the gas performance standards on cars, rather than start drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.Clark claims most of Iowa’s electricity comes from coal plants that do not meet Clean Air Standards, and the Bush plan won’t change that. She says Bush should “stop trying to meet today’s problems with yesterday’s tired, dirty solutions.”Bush will visit the Biomass Energy Conversation facility in Nevada Thursday.
