State officials are urging Iowans to take time this week to participate in “Project Impact Week.” Project Impact is a federal program designed to prevent damage from natural disasters. Linda Roose is the Project Impact coordinator for the Iowa Emergency Management Division. She says they’re encouraging Iowans to prepare for an emergency before it happens.Roose says there are many things individual homeowners can do to buttress their dwellings against disaster. You can use wind-resistant shingles, raise appliances off the ground, or modify the home’s structure to withstand disaster. She says there are lots of helpful tips on-line via the Project Impact website at www.fema.gov/impact, or contact your local emergency management office. Roose says there may be some financial assistance available for home improvements.Roose says preparing a home ahead of time can save you a lot of money and anguish if a natural disaster does hit.
