A new survey finds Iowa businesses nervous about the economy. The latest Manpower survey of Iowa businesses found only 23 percent plan to hire more workers this summer. Michael Lynch, a spokesman for Manpower Temporary Services, says that wasn’t a big surprise as employers have had mixed emotions about the economy..Just 10 percent of Iowa businesses plan to cut their workforce. The other two-thirds will keep their payroll the same.Waterloo-area businesses expressed the greatest reservations, with only seven percent saying they intend to hire more people. Cedar Rapids and Sioux City were the “hot spots” where 30 percent of businesses said they’d put more people on the payroll this summer. However, 20 percent of the businesses in Cedar Rapids and Dubuque said they’d lay off workers.Here are the stats on the cities: in Burlington 23 percent said they’d hire, 67 percent said no change and 10 percent said they’d layoff workers; in Cedar Rapids 30 percent said they’d hire, half said no change and 20 percent said they’d layoff workers; in Des Moines, 23 percent said they’d hire; 60 percent said no change and 17 percent said they’d layoff workers; in Dubuque 10 percent said they’d hire, 63 percent said no change and 20 percent said they’ll layoff workers; in Iowa City 27 percent said they’d hire, 60 percent said no change and 13 percent said they’ll layoff workers; in Iowa Quad Cities 20 percent said they’d hire, 80 percent said no change and none said they’d layoff; in Marshalltown 28 percent said they’d hire, 55 percent said no change and 14 percent said they’ll layoff workers; in Mason City area 27 percent said they’d hire, 73 percent said no change and none said they’d layoff workers; in Muscatine 27 percent said they’d hire, 60 percent said no change and 13 percent said they’ll layoff workers; in Ottumwa 23 percent said they’d hire, 67 percent said no change and 10 percent said they’ll hire workers; in Sioux City 30 percent said they’d hire, 70 percent said no change and none said they’ll layoff workers; in Waterloo seven percent said they’d hire, 86 percent said no change and seven percent said they’ll layoff workers.
