Public schools statewide may be letting out soon, but for some Iowa kids it’s not the finish of class. Education director Chris Chuich at Sylvan Learning Center in Bettendorf says plenty of students are already signed up for some summer school work.Chuich says some sign up as early as winter, when mid-year report cards signal a problem. Others look at achievement tests during the year, or final report cards, and decide it’s time for summer school. She says high expectations in the Fall can change into a desire to get help by January.There are two areas where most kids need a boost, reading, followed by math skills. Chuich says the summer-school format is only part-time, not full schooldays, and is generally more casual and aimed individually at students getting help. Besides, she adds, it gives schoolkids something to do during the long days of summer.
