The State of Iowa is holding a special field school later this month to study the Fort Atkinson site in northeast Iowa. The military post was created in 1830 to seperate the Dakota Sioux from the Meskwaki and Sauk Native American tribes. Shirley Schermer is the Burial Program Director for the State Archeologist. She says the school is designed to teach about archeological and historical research. Schermer says they hope to put together a database of information on the area. They’ll summarize what they’ve learned about the site, and come up with suggestions for future research. She says it’s important to keep records on this and other historical sites in Iowa. The field school is set for June 17 through the 23rd. About a dozen people are expected to participate.
