The Des Moines City Council got an earful at a hearing Monday night. The proposed ordinance to ban discrimination against homosexuals brought out lots of comment, ranging from gratitude to moral indignation. The ordinance would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation, adding that to religion, race, national origin and gender as reasons that can’t be used to deny housing, jobs or use of public accommodations. Mayors of three other cities in Iowa that have added sexual preference to their discrimination laws say so far it’s had little impact. Council Member Tom Vlassis voted for the ordinance, and just before the vote had reassurance for those who objected on moral grounds. He says the ordinance does not include participation in acts that’re prohibited by law.
