Hoping to go to the fair for some good live entertainment? The fair industry is changing, and many of the nation’s 33-hundred fairs are reconsidering grandstand entertainment. Bob Fox, manager of Davenport’s Mississippi Valley fair, says major acts are getting tough to book. Many would rather play casinos and other venues, where they can make more than touring to fairs and festivals were their first choice. Go to a concert, or go to the local fair? It used to be both, with big-name entertainers performing at the grandstand. But these days Mississippi Valley Fair manager Bob Fox says it’s getting harder to book performers, and it may not be what fairgoers want, anyway. He says people aren’t as willing to pay more for performers.Fox says more and more fair managers are opting to let visitors see all the displays for the cost of a general-admission ticket, and skip the grandstand entertainers, and the extra charge for the shows. He says the fair industry has to stay fresh every year. At the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, where Fox is manager, he says every couple years they have to make big changes in attractions to keep it interesting.
