Two elections are scheduled today in southwest Iowa. With a special session of the legislature coming up, there’s some time pressure to fill the seat left vacant after state senator Darryl McLaren resigned as a lawmaker to take a position with the federal agriculture department. The democratic candidate is John O’Brien, a city councilman in Atlantic. And the republican candidate, Hubert Houser, quit his post as a state representative to try for the state senate seat. That means his seat in the House must also be filled. That election pits Chuck Larsen of Hamburg, an electrician, against Mills County Supervisor Gerald Jones. The candidates have had only a couple of weeks to campaign, and the winners of today’s elections will report for duty when the special session convenes one week from today.
