Think it’s been wet in Iowa? The State Climatologist can confirm that, but he says it’s NOT as wet as it was in 1993 — or in 1998 or ’99. State Climatologist Harry Hillacker says one of the reasons 1993 was such a flood year was because the ground was so saturated heading into the year. He says we’ve had some hot days this year, too, which prompted more evaporation than in ’93, the year of the big floods. So far this year, Iowa has recorded about 18-and-a-half inches of rain — about five-and-a-half inches above normal. Hillacker says the rainfall has cured parts of the state which saw drought conditions last year. June is always Iowa’s rainiest month. May, though, averages the greatest number of rainy days.
