The Ames-based National Farmers Organization is launching a new marketing program it hopes will bring more profit to pork producers.N-F-O Director of Livestock Brian Harris says under the “PorkPayback” plan, independent producers deliver their hogs directly to the packer. The processed meat is purchased by the Confederated Swine Producers, which then market it under the American Family Farms label. Harris says producers share in the profits from the sale of the pork.He says the N-F-O program isn’t meant to compete with the large-scale pork producers, it’s a way to give independent producers another option for their hogs. Harris says they program will keep more independent producers from going out of business.Harris says it’s a program that doesn’t involve a lot of risk for producers as they pay a dollar-a-head to be involved in the program.
