A Massachusetts Senator will be in Iowa this weekend, dipping his toe in to see what the water’s like for a presidential campaign in the year 2004. Senator John Kerrey will be in Mount Pleasant Sunday as the main “draw” at Governor Tom Vilsack’s “Family Picnic.”Kerrey insists he’s not yet running for President, mostly because he has to run for re-election to the U-S Senate in 2002. He says he’s turned down a lot of appearances so he can concentrate on that goal. But Kerrey says “the door’s open” for a presidential bid, he says being coy or artificial about his plans doesn’t serve anyone’s purpose. He says it’s really too premature to make any decision.Kerrey, who is a Vietnam vet, says he’ll run regardless of whether Al Gore runs again in 2004. Kerrey spoke to Iowa political reporters by phone this afternoon.
