The redistricting plan legislators endorsed Tuesday is now law. Governor Tom Vilsack has given his approval to the redistricting plan, saying it’s “fair, balanced and competitive.” Every 10 years congressional and legislative district lines are redrawn, based on new Census data, to maintain the one-person/one-vote concept. Iowa still has five congressional districts, but because Iowa’s population has shifted east, four of the districts are in the eastern two-thirds of the state. The remaining 32 counties in the western third are drawn into a single district. It’s been jokingly called the eastern Nebraska district, and it’s the most overwhelmingly Republican of all five districts. Three of the other districts have a democrat voter registration edge, while the other is a nearly 50/50 toss up.
