The presidential campaign for 2004 may be kicking off in Iowa this weekend. Democrat Bill Bradley, a candidate last year, will be in Iowa City Saturday and Massachusetts Senator John Kerrey, another democrat, will be in Mount Pleasant on Sunday. Former Iowa Democratic Party chairman John Roehrich isn’t surprised,Roehrick, who was Iowa Democrats’ chair from 1989 ’til ’93, says it seems the campaigns start earlier every time around.Jeff Link ran Al Gore’s Iowa campaign in 2000, and he says the Gore staffers are keeping in touch, just in case Gore decides to run again. Both Link and Roehrick say Iowa Democrat candidates will benefit from the early kick-off of the 2004 race, as national party luminaries will be willing to come to Iowa to headline campaign fundraisers in exchange for face time with groups of democrat activists.
