Iowans who are interested in a close encounter with a few hundred creepy, crawly insects may consider buzzing by the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines this weekend. Self-proclaimed bug enthusiast and international insect photographer David Jordan will be narrating a slide show of his work.Jordan, the retired editor in chief of “Better Homes and Gardens” magazine, says the best pictures of unusual bugs were snapped in his own yard in Des Moines, not in some exotic location. Jordan says he’s long been fascinated by bugs and he aims to share his enthusiasm.Jordan’s favorite bug is the tiger beetle, of which there are several species in Iowa. He says they’re interestingly-made predators with bulgy eyes, long legs, massive jaws and they fly very fast just inches off the ground “like little fighter planes.” Insects, he says, are strange, weird and beautiful creations.Jordan’s presentations will be held at 1:30 p-m today and tomorrow.
