details of the budget cutbacks — and layoffs — that’ll take place when the new fiscal year begins Monday. Seventeen state troopers are getting pink slips, and one of the state’s fire inspectors is being laid off. Four crime scene technicians will be let go, as well as one of the supervisors in the state crime lab. Six or seven state drug agents will be laid off, too. In addition, all overtime and nearly all temporary jobs in the Department of Public Safety will be eliminated. Stats from the Department of Public Health indicate nearly a million dollars has been hacked out of the budget for treating people with addictions. That means about 770 Iowans will be denied substance abuse treatment, and another 16-thousand Iowans who are undergoing treatment will see cutbacks.
