A member of the Council Bluffs City Council plans to run for the new, western Iowa fifth district congressional seat. Thirty-four-year-old Paul Shomshor is a democrat, and says calling the new fifth district heavily republican is a misnomer. He says there are 125,000 registered independents which he says is 35-percent of the registered voters. He says the race in the district will depend on who can win over the independents.Shomsor says western Iowa will probably be better served by one big district as it’s drawn, rather than being split up. Shomsor is a tax manager for Cong-Agra. He says if elected, he’d like to see some changes in tax law.Shomsor is the only democrat to announce a run for the new fifth district. Council Bluffs businessman Jeff Ballenger, a republican, plans to run. Current fifth district Congressman Tom Latham will run for re-election, but in the new fourth congressional district. Republican House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs has formed an exploratory committee to raise money for a congressional run. State Senator Steve King of Kiron and Senator John Redwine of Sioux City have said they’re interested in running. Both are republicans.
