This is the first week of the new state fiscal year and many agencies are still adjusting their budgets to deal with cuts. At the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, officials are trying to cut six-and-a-half million dollars. U-N-I interim vice president of administration and finance, Eunice Dell, says no one who’s currently employed will lose their jobs. They won’t lay anyone off, they’re just not filling around 60 open positions. That includes 34 faculty positions, some graduate assistants and over 26 full-time staff members. Dell says leaving the positions open will save about half of what’s needed, the rest will come in cuts to other areas such as supplies. Dell says the budget cut is compounded by a five-point-six percent raise approved by the State Board of Regents for faculty and staff.
