An Iowa State University study finds most of the fresh produce Iowans buy was grown over 15-hundred miles away. But locally grown fruits and veggies traveled an average of just 45 miles from farm to plate. Rich Pirog of Iowa State University’s Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture says if Iowans bought more Iowa-grown produce, there’d be alot of fuel savings.Pirog says their analysis found the semis used to ship fruits and vegetables in from out-of-state used up to 17 times more fuel, and emitted up to 17 times more carbon dioxide than the trucks used to haul Iowa-produce to Iowa markets. He says the local system uses smaller light-duty trucks that burn cleaner fuels.Pirog says if Iowans increased their purchase of Iowa-grown produce by 10 percent, Iowa farmers would gain over 54-million dollars. The full report is posted on the Internet at www.leopold.iastate.edu
